Trivia Fact 1: For quite some time, we seriously considered making this the Kyrgyz yak expedition. Yaks are perfectly suited to difficult terrain, strong and have wonderful personalities. They will come when called, like dogs, and can even be trained to protect your camp.

Unfortunately, yaks have evolved so that they are perfectly adapted to altitudes of around 4000 metres. Too much of our route covers practical lowlands - only 2000m - where yaks would be hot and uncomfortable. Back to the drawing board!

Trivia Fact 2: Did you know that temperatures across Kyrgyzstan can vary by as much as 40C in summer?

Trivia Fact 3: Did you know that the current horses of Kyrgyzstan are the result of interbreeding between the native Kyrgyz horse which is a small, rugged pony, the Russian military horse and the famous Akhal Tekes?

More to come!
