Tioman Island: Making Tracks

Us and them!

Tioman beach tracks at sunset

If all's gone well, by now our track has brought us to Istanbul and we're recovering from twenty eight hours of air travel. Our pace has been fairly leisurely of late, but all that's about to change - the Turkey itinerary's hectic!

Oh. In case you're wondering what kind of critter made those tracks on Tioman's Air Batang Beach, it was one of these guys. A much bigger one obviously, because at about 30cm from nose to tail, this is just a baby. One that needs to stay well away from his parents!

Pulau Tioman water monitor (juvenile)

The Tioman Island Water Monitor. They grow really big and if it flies, swims or crawls (or lies there rotting) they'll eat it.

Mama cat at YP Chalets was missing her lower right front leg from taking on one that was thinking of a kitten brunch. I'm not sure how she managed to get away on only three legs from a 2 metre lizard capable of surprising bursts of speed.

We were a bit taken aback when we discovered they venture into the ocean. They're wary of humans they encounter on land, but I'd hate to inadvertently steal a wave from one in the water...
